Whether you added a puppy or dog to your family, you are fostering a pup in need and want to start off on the right foot, or your current dog has developed some behavioral challenges, my first piece of advice, the first solution I typically offer -
KEEP A LEASH ON YOUR DOG AT ALL TIMES
In the backyard and yes, even inside the house!
The ability to follow through with what you say, the boundaries you set, the expectations you require is crucial in building or changing your dog's belief about what you'll accept and what you won't.
Dog jumps on people - hold or step on the leash
Dog runs away playing catch me if you can! or hides under furniture? - use the leash
Counter surfing,
refusing to go into the crate,
chasing the cat or kids,
getting into or grabbing things they shouldn’t...
you name the issue...
Using a leash enables you to build strong obedience skills and prevent unwanted behaviors before they turn into habits.
Until your dog is making good choices on their own or are reliable with verbal commands, Leash On!
